Abstract: The talk provides an overview of University of Oulu / Centre for Wireless Communications research related to general interference management and multiantenna signal processing between network nodes that have limited capability to exchange control information with each other.
The basic hypothesis is that the only remaining solution to increase both the user and network spectral efficiency especially in the interference limited environments (node coverage edges) is to allow coordination/cooperation between network nodes. This is also reflected in the current standardisation activities leading to IMT-A compliant networks and beyond. The limited signalling capability of wired or wireless backhaul links between the network nodes is an important design parameter that has to be also carefully considered when deriving resource management strategies. Dynamic multi-dimensional RRM across time, frequency, space (location) is investigated in heterogeneous networks consisting of large (macro) cells with very large (massive) MIMO arrays and underlying small cells with distributed MIMO arrays. The cellular structure is complemented with network controlled direct device-to-device communication and coordinated nomadic or mobile relays. Specifically, we consider scheduling (user and beam selection) and joint transmitter-receiver design, as well as, effective CSI acquisition via pilot signaling and backhaul information exchange.
Decentralized practical methods for different design criteria, such as weighted sum rate maximization and minimum power beamforming subject to QoS constraints, are derived based on locally available knowledge.
Bio: Antti Tölli received his Dr.Sc (Tech) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland in June 2008. Before joining the Department of Communication Engineering and Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at the University of Oulu, he worked five years for Nokia Networks, IP Mobility Networks division as a Research Engineer and Project Manager both in Finland and Spain. Currently he works as Adjunct Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the DCE of the University of Oulu. He served as a General co-chair of IEEE WDN in 2010 and 2011, as well as Finance chair in IEEE CTW 2011. His main research interests are in radio resource management and transceiver design for broadband wireless communications with special emphasis on distributed interference management in heterogeneous wireless networks.
A. Tölli has published about 100 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences, as well as, several patents all in the area of signal processing and wireless communications.
